Zuckerberg Wants Kids To Use Facebook

Kids-on-FacebookFacebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg this week said that younger children should be allowed on the site for education purposes. According to him: "In the future, software and technology will enable people to learn a lot from their fellow students."
Saying these words he has picked up a minor controversy as all of us would hardly agree to allow kids under 13 to use facebook. Before this news facebook allowed only people above 13 to use facebook. This March facebook banned 20,000 profiles on facebook who were underage, still about 7.5 million students from America are already on facebook but they lie about their age!
He further said,

Education is clearly the biggest thing that will drive how the economy improves over the long term. We spend a lot of time talking about this… In the future, software and technology will enable people to learn a lot from their fellow students… That will be a fight we take on at some point. My philosophy is that for education you need to start at a really, really young age…. Because of the restrictions we haven’t even begun this learning process… If they’re lifted then we’d start to learn what works. We’d take a lot of precautions to make sure that they [younger kids] are safe.

This issue can be very controversial as facebook can put a negative impact on our younger generation. People from different walks of life and of different ages are wasting their precious time on facebook. This has decrease concentration on work and family. How can we allow our younger generation to use a social networking site if we ourselves are not using it in a positive manner?
Some Sources here

Effects On Efficiency at Work Due To Facebook

Facebook is continuously cutting the efficiency at work. Survey finds 77% of Facebookers use the social networking site while on the job.
Companies that allow users to access Facebook in the workplace lose an average of 1.5% in total employee productivity, according to a new report from Nucleus Research, an IT research company. The survey of 237 employees also showed that 77% of workers who have a Facebook account use it during work hours. Out of those using Facebook at work, 87% said they had no clear business reason for using the site.

Effects Of Facebook On College Students

Facebook users usually get lower grades in college; another study has found that the social networking site might not be earning good grades in the workplace as well.

Facebook Alternatives for kids

There are alternatives to Facebook for young children. The one I came to know is the  siteTogetherville. Togetherville is a social network created specifically for children. Parents use their own Facebook accounts to help kids sign up for Togetherville and then parents and children can use the site together to introduce children to social networking in a safer environment.

My Personal View

I personally feel that children should be kept away from facebook. Facebook along with other social media sites can play a very negative role in their lives. It can decrease their creativity and affect their school studies.

A Burning Question:
If facebook has not been able to bring a positive change in people elder than 13 than how can you expect that it can be used as a tool to aid students in their studies? :)
