Why An HTML Resume Is Beneficial...

Why An HTML Resume Is Beneficial...

With the job market seeing continual decline over the past few years, one can never do too much to increase one's brand. One of the best ways to do this is by creating a downloadable HTML resume that will show off that brand new shiny online bachelor degree you just completed. Fortunately, creating a small website with all of your qualifications, information, and occupational desires isn’t too hard these days.

For $50-100 a year you can purchase a domain name, host the website, and purchase some pretty good looking resume themes to show off what you got. These kinds of small projects can take a few hours, can really boost your credibility, and can create exposure to future employers. Below are several reasons why having an HTML version of your resume can be very beneficial.

It Saves Trees...(i.e. people don’t keep track of paper)

It’s not rare these days for people to do most of if not the entirety of their work online or on a screen. Sometimes handing someone a paper copy of your resume will not ensure that they will see it later or get it to the right person. This can cause stress for some people and requires one to repeatedly ask/call a hiring manager to inquire about whether or not they received it.

It’s Fast

If an employer does happen to lose a resume or wants to see yours at a glance, they will just have to click on the link that you have emailed them to find your resume. This can be far faster than searching through a pile of papers that can all begin to look the same. It can also be viewed on the web browser of a smart phone wherever they are at the time. This kind of efficiency can impress potential employers and set you apart because you made it easy for them to find your information when they needed it.

It’s Accessible

If you’re in the middle of a major job search, chances are that you have dozens, if not hundreds, of applications and prospects in the pipeline. Printing resumes for every interview, application, or opportunity can be difficult. It also limits your exposure only to those that hold your paper resume. With an HTML resume it is available for the entire world to see. You can send people a direct link, link to it on social media sites, and make it available when folks are simply searching the internet.

It’s Just Cooler...

Ok ok...this isn’t much of a reason for a lot of jobs, but if you’re a creative or going into a creative field it certainly can’t hurt to do some things with your HTML resume that you wouldn't necessarily do on paper. The possibilities are endless, and it will only be that much more impressive to an employer that you know how to innovate and take advantage of common technology that most people don’t.

For the sake of brevity I’ll conclude with one simple piece of advice. If you don’t currently have an HTML resume...you best get on it
