Set Up Remote FTP Connections To Your Android

Did you know that you could manage the files in your Android phone from your PC through WiFi or 3G connection without cable or bluetooth? If not, then read on to know how to use remote FTP connections to your phone from anywhere.

First install FTPServer from Android Market. After installation, the icon will appear in your launcher.

On first launch, it will ask for username, password, port etc. You can choose them according to your choice.

Then check the checkboxes saying "Accept Connections". Then tap "Save and Restart Service".

Now you'll have a blank window with the IP Address of the server on the top. We'll need the IP Address, so note it down.

Congrats, you have successfully configured your phone. Now lets head over to the PC. We shall see how to configure the connection on Linux, and then Windows.

CONFIGURE LINUX

We have used elementaryOS here, but it should be similar for any distro running gnome.

Find "Places" in menu and select "Connect to Server".

Now, when asked for the details, enter the IP Address that you noted down and the port and username those you had configured in the phone. Now click "Connect". If you wanna use it later, remember to check "Add Bookmark".

If everything goes right, now you can browse through your files in the phone.

CONFIGURE WINDOWS

These instructions are for Windows 7. The steps should be similar for Vista.

First open "My Computer". Right click anywhere to bring the context menu and select "Add network location".

Now you'll be guided through the setup wizard. Select "Choose a custom network location". Then click "Next".

Now enter the address like this - ftp://IP:port (Replace "IP" and "port" with their respective values)

Now you have to enter the username. Be sure to uncheck "Login anonimously". Then proceed to next step.

Now give a name to the network location and finish the wizard.

When you'll connect to the network, it will ask for your password. After entering the password, click log on to access your phone.

Now you can manage your phone from windows explore remotely:)

When connected, your phone will be like this. You can go to the settings or stop the FTP Service by pressing the menu button and selecting appropriate option.

CyanogenMod 7 Released

Today, the Gingerbread version of the most popular custom ROM CyanogenMod 7, has been released after four release candidates. According to the CyanogenMod blog, a few features from Froyo-based CM6 have not yet been implemented in this version, but they are on track to be included with 7.1.

If you are not aware what cyanogenmod is, it is a custom ROM available for many android devices. Cyanogenmod features many cool options not available in stock ROM. The DSP equalizer and custom themes are certainly great. And with the latest release, it brings the goodness of latest android 2.3.

According to cyanogen, the most recommended method to install cyanogenmod is via ROM manager. You are recommended to do a full backup of your apps and personal data with titanium backup and other utilities and to a factory reset before installing, even if upgrading from cm6.

Sony Opens New Site For Unlocking Bootloaders

Finally, Sony has kept its promise. Sony recently opened a website regarding unlocking of the bootloaders of its newer 2011 Xperia™ phones range of phones.

The officially supported models are Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ pro and Xperia™ PLAY. Sony has clearly mentioned the consequences of unlocking the bootloader and that you'll potentially void your warranty.

Sadly, but as expected, older Xperia™ phones such as Xperia™ X10, Xperia™ X10 Mini etc. cannot be unlocked. Recently the bootloader of Xperia™ X10 has been unlocked unofficially. So no big challenge here.

The New Opera Mobile Store Launched

Opera Software has launched a new cross-platform, applications store for mobile devices across 200 countries. The app store is in partnership with Appia, "The leading provider of open application marketplace technology". There are both paid and free apps for mobile phones running Android, BlackBerry, Palm, Symbian and Windows Mobile, also Java-enabled phones.

The app store experience is said to be based on the location and device of the user, which will decide the kind of applications available and the currency in use. Unlike other app stores, it allows to download apps to the Desktop rather than requiring to download on mobile. And you can access it on all browsers, not only Opera.

Opera has also launched a portal for publishers to get information about publishing their own apps on the Opera Mobile store. According to the press release, the Mobile store has already seen more than 15 million users in February and have seen 700,000 downloads a day.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb Now Available

Google has released Android 3.0 Honeycomb, tailored for the tablet devices. The new tablet oriented interface has stunning graphics and is a marked improvement over previous.

There are Google text and voice search on top left, on bottom left has back, home, and app switch buttons. Bottom right has the time, WiFi signal, and battery. There is also an Apps button on top right that takes you to the traditional list of software, and a plus sign that takes you to a pretty classy view of the panes and a list of widgets you can add, app shortcuts to insert, wallpapers to adjust and the more.

There is a revised calendar look that just like Gmail lets you scroll through items from the home screen, a new browser widget, a revised contact widget and many more.

UC Browser 7.4 - Big Step From User Oriented Changes

The UC Browser has an update in the early November; I think most of our guys are enjoying it right now. I’ve noticed the news about the update, but I want to see comments about this new update to decide whether it’s a good choice to try 7.4 or not. I install the 7.4 today, and then glad to find there are really some changes I want to share with you. And the still powerful download, which could help users to get over the operator’s file size limitation, and data compression and fast speed function are all been well kept in this new version. All the changes may be small, but they hit my necessary a lot and it is really becoming a mobile browser for worldwide users.

The first one is the cursor mode as default. It’s really good for new users who are so familiar with this mode from Opera mini. Frankly speaking, I paid a lot of hours to make clear the word - “common mode” when I started to use UC Browser 7, then I changed to cursor mode which felt much more easy to use for me. New users can skip this learning step now. To the UC Browser, it is really a worldwide browser now.

The second change I feel happy to see is the improved feedback mechanism. We all know that the UC Team has a forum. But how could I report a bug or share my opinion on the go? In UC Browser 7.2, the feedback function is so poor that I even haven’t any interest to open it, but in this update of UC Browser7.4, I find the difference. When I click the menu button and choose feedback, a form jumps out as a new tab and I can write what I want to say to UC Team and get updated about the things if I leave my email address.

The third change is the returning free copy function. I was so confused about the reason why UC team cut the free copy function in 7.2 version. I like the function so much; it helps me to share with my friends. I used to post for requiring it back in 7.2 version, but it didn’t work. So I used Opera mini for some time during the UC Browser 7.2 version. But now it comes back, I can start using it again.

Another very important things is that UC Team seems to have fixed the access bug for Vodafone Live. Actually, I am with a sim card from Vodafone Live, in the old version, UC Browser can just visit wap sites with this APN, but now, it seems totally OK with my mobile now, thanks UC Team for doing that.

Although the changes I refer here are so small, but they are really useful during browsing. The UC Team is really doing something we can see from the first sight. I’m glad to see that and I suggest you to try the new UC Browser(you can find files at their wapsite), you’ll love it as me.

Latest UC Browser 7.4 - Keep Mobile Browsing Beautiful MediaFire Download Links

The UC Browser, 7.4 seems totally a new browser for us. It’s a new player in mobile browser market, competing with Opera Mini, Skyfire and Bolt. Opera mini has its attracting features to me, and so is UC Browser. I like its fast download and powerful settings which I can make the browser fully for my personal habits, such as the power shortcut system, the text space in the pages, content folding … All is for you to set them as you like.

Although there are several functions that I want don’t appear in this version, but I still think it deserves you to have a try.

“As our users are booming all over the world, our servers are managing much more requests than ever before. We have increased our server groups.” The super moderator in UC Forum writes. I have posted in the UC Forum many time referring about visiting problems, finally they heard and add servers for it. Now I feel faster than ever before.

“We also optimized our webpage management technology for better displaying webpages on mobile phones.” the super moderator continues, “in this new version, we have provided better support of WAP2.0, an advanced standard for mobile sites. More elements in the webpages can be displayed on mobile browser.” I’ve tested for Yahoo and Songs.pk, you can see the screenshots, I think it’s a real progress for UC Browser.

With this improvement, I can now make the “Adaptive View”, sort of “Mobile View” in Opera Mini, to become my daily browsing choice. In this mode, the internet becomes really mobile for me.

In “Zoom Mode”, webpages are just for 15 inch or bigger computer screens, how could they be good if they are displayed full in a 4.3 inch (even smaller) mobile phone screen? I don’t want to zoom in and out continuously to find the content I am interested.

While in adaptive view, I can check all the content displayed “adaptive” on the screen, whether it is big or small. Now you can see clearly from my screenshots that in Mobile View mode, UC Browser displays the webpage better than Opera Mini

Another obvious change is the new design of navigation area. The “My Shortcuts” and totallynew navigation area on the home screen really attract my eyes once I update from 7.2. It’s nice and kind of “Speed Dial” in Opera Mini. But it’s not the same as Opera Mini; UC Browser provides this function in its own style.

As it is named, “My Shortcuts” is a collection of most visited sites. These sites will appear in it automatically according to the visiting history. I can also make them sticky all the time too. The new navigation area is now rearranged in a much better way. With two columns, all the sites are listed within categories. Each category with lead you to a page contain many similar sites you might like. But I find there are some mistakes on sites and name spelling a few days ago, but they disappear now. Maybe the UC Team is adjusting this new feature

12 popular sites are picked as icon links just beneath the “My Shortcuts” to make us easy to visit. There are sites I used most of the time, such as Google, Dantri and Yahoo; there are also sites I can download ringtones or apps such as GetJar and 1Mobile. Forget about typing address to visit sites, most sites you interested will appear in your hands after about 3 clicks under this new design.

There are some other features in UC Browser can meet your various needs while browsing, such as its famous download, supporting breakpoint transmission and multi-thread; save and sharefunction enables you share pages by SMS; and the amazing night mode, which can make me enjoy browsing at night without disturbing my roommate’s sleep.
